Abilify is the brand name of the drug aripiprazole, an antipsychotic medication approved by the FDA in 2002. Currently prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, it’s patent runs out in 2015 which will make it available as a generic in that year.
Abilify Side Effects

Precautions for Abilify
There are certain drugs that if you are taking you will need to let your doctor or healthcare provider know about before you go on Abilify. These drugs include:

These medications may need to be changed if you are on any of these medications. No matter what medications you are on, make sure your doctor is well aware of them if he is going to prescribe you Abilify.
The drug can make you drowsy and you should not operate cars or machinery until you know how you are going to react to the medications. You also should not drink while on the medication as it can increase the drowsiness of the drug.
You should realize that it is harder to cool down on Abilify, so if you work outside much or exercise a great deal you will need to realize this so that you can take special precautions not to overheat and become exhausted. Always stay very hydrated while on this drug.
Abilify and Diabetes
Abilify contains sugar, so if you are a diabetic you will need to realize this and alter your insulin habits with this. Tell your doctor if you are a diabetic so they can monitor your reaction to the drug. Abilify can cause a state of hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, even in those that do not have diabetes. If you feel thirsty, have to pee a lot, get extreme hunger and blurred vision, along with weakness, you should see a doctor immediately. Very high blood sugars can result in a life threatening state of ketoacidosis.
