The intention of the drug Plavix is to help keep your blood platelets from sticking together. So in other words, it is used to keep blood from forming clots. When people have had a cardiac event or stroke, they are most often given Plavix or a drug similar to it.
Since Plavix is blood thinning drug, it can cause you to bleed easily. Even the most minor of injuries can make you bleed out profusely. Bleeding on the inside of your body is a high risk as well when taking Plavix. This is why your treating doctor must be very knowledgable about the action of this drug before prescribing it for you.
One thing you don’t want to do while taking Plavix is take aspirins. Taking aspirins are a hazard with this drug for sure, and can even cause hemorrhaging. The same goes for other non-steroidal medicines over the counter as well such as Ibuprofen, and Aleve. Before you pick up an over-the counter drug for pains, PLEASE talk to the pharmacist to know whether it poses a real danger or not.
If you have other conditions such as, a past stroke, kidney or liver disease, other bleeding disorders such as hemophilia, or ulcerative colitis or kidney problems, advise your treating physician about these medical problems. Plavix may be very dangerous to swallow under those conditions.
This drug seems to be okay in pregnant women. However, it may hurt the child when you are breastfeeding. Always let your doctor know if you are intending to breastfeed when taking Plavix.
This medication must be taken carefully, and exactly as your doctor prescribed it for you. Do not ever alter the dosage on your own as this will prove to be dangerous. You should always take Plavix with a full glass of water, and it can be taken with or without food.
If you are going in for a dental procedure or cleaning, please inform your dentist that you are on Plavix. Teeth cleaning or other dental procedures can cause a lot of bleeding. You must also be careful when brushing your teeth.
Blood testing on a very regular basis is important when your are on Plavix therapy. You need to stick to all of your scheduled doctor visits and blood tests so that your condition is monitored closely by your doctor.
Plavix does have a number of possible side effects with it. There can be serious things such as bloody stools, pallor to the skin, nosebleeds, confusion, and other related symptoms such as trouble with speaking, numbness on one side of the body, and vision problems. Less serious side effects include a headache, and having stomach pains.
If you have any side effects while on Plavix, report them to your doctor. If the side effects are more serious, you need to seek medical help right away. This is a serious drug to be under the influence of so do watch it carefully.
