Indocin is a drug in the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory family of drugs. It helps in reducing the inflammation from various types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, and others. Some doctors have prescribed Indocin in order to treat people with migraine headaches.
There are several precautions to take before your doctor would prescribe Indocin. Your doctor will need your full medical background, and ALL of the medicines you are using including anything that is over-the-counter. Many over-the-counter medicines may cause some very unwanted interactions with Indocin. If you are taking any of the ACE inhibitors, diuretics, or blood thinners, these medications may have serious interactions with the use of Indocin.
Your doctor needs to know if you have any blood vessel, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, breathing problems, any history of mental problems, stomach or digestive problems, and also hypertension or blood clotting problems. Indocin may not be safe to take under these conditions unless your doctor determines that it is okay.
Anyone that has had a past history of any stomach ulcers or bleeding ulcers should not be placed on Indocin. Indocin may easily cause bleeding ulcers and this is an emergency situation. If you have been on Indocin for a long period of time, you are also likely to experience serious heart and blood vessel problems which can be life threatening.
It is not safe to use Indocin while you are either pregnant or nursing a baby. Indocin may seriously affect the heart of the unborn child, and the drug may also pass on into breast-milk. If you are in either one of these situations, you need to let your doctor know before you ever take Indocin.
It is very important that you take Indocin just as the doctor has recommended it on the medicine label. Never mix this medication with any alcoholic beverage since this may start bleeding problems occurring. You need to swallow your Indocin with at least an 8 ounce glass of water each time. The daily dose you will be on is according to your needs.
Some of the most common side effects of Indocin are diarrhea or constipation, upset stomach, and vertigo. Other than causing possible bleeding problems, other serious side effects may be trouble in breathing, weight gain, changes in mood, seizures, possible numbness in the extremities, projectile vomiting, chills, and fevers. If you experience any of these effects while taking Indocin, then it is imperative you contact your doctor right away.
