The drug Tamiflu is an antiviral type of medicine which helps to block types of both influenza, A and B. In order to be most effective, the condition must be diagnosed very early on no later than 48 hours from onset of the influenza virus. This drug may be used as a preventive type of medication as well. With people that cannot receive a seasonal flu shot, Tamiflu is a drug that is recommended for the prevention of influenza.
Before using Tamiflu, your doctor should know if you have any heart, kidney, or lung problems. If you have had any type of brain disorder which causes pressure on the brain, you should also let your treating physician know of this too.
Tamiflu can cause some uncommon side effects which are serious. These include things like hallucinations, getting delirious or confused, or other such neurological signs. Tamiflu may also cause a person to experience a rare allergic reaction to the drug. If you have any symptoms such as swelling of the tongue, trouble breathing, and hives, get to the emergency department at once and bring the medicine bottle with you.
Side effects that are not as serious are possibly nausea, nosebleeds, eyes are uncomfortable, possible headaches, dizziness, and trouble sleeping, upset stomach, and also vomiting. If any of these side effects are bothersome to you, report them to your doctor soon.
In order for this medication to cure your illness, you must take the fully prescribed doses of it for the five day period. For the prevention of influenza A or B, take for 10 days once per day. If you have missed a scheduled dosage of Tamiflu, take it when you remember as long as it is not more than 2 hours past. If longer, skip that dosage, and go on to take the next one.
No one knows for sure if there are any negative side effects on pregnant women taking Tamiflu. Most doctors would not prescribe this drug for any nursing mother.
Tamiflu can usually safely be given to children at least 12 months of age and older. Tamiflu is currently available in a liquid suspension form, or pill forms. It should be taken with some type of solid food to curb the possible nausea effect. Capsules are available in 30, 45, or 75 milligrams each. The dosage prescribed by your doctor all depends upon your individual situation.
