Have you ever wondered why men lose weight faster than women? Perhaps you’re a woman who’s wondering how on earth your husband managed to lose that vast amount of weight last year when the two of you went on the same diet together, and yet, his involvement in the exercise routine was substandard.
If this thought has crossed your mind on more than one occasion, you’re not alone. Unfortunately ladies, it’s the men who win the battle of the bulge when embarking on an exercise routine with their wives. It has to do with their genetic makeup.
For example, because men naturally secrete more testosterone (i.e. an anabolic muscle building hormone), they are genetically predisposed to carry more muscle mass than women. Consequently, muscle is a very metabolically active tissue; thus, it burns more calories at rest.
Therefore, the more muscle a person has, the more calories that are burned during rest. Unfortunate indeed ladies; however, keep in mind that women are naturally equipped with more adipose (i.e. fat) stores than men, in order to provide a viable childbearing environment.
In addition, the answer to that dreaded question of “What do you want to eat for dinner?” is fundamentally different between men and women. It is well known that men prefer to eat meat and meat is an excellent source of amino acids – the building blocks of protein needed for the growth and repair of muscle tissue.
Conversely, carbohydrates, preferred by women, although not always bad, many times contribute to accelerated fat storage by signaling the pancreas to secrete insulin. Of course insulin is an essential hormone, needed to transfer glucose from the blood into cells of the body. However, when blood glucose levels are high and too much insulin is secreted, any unused blood glucose gets stored as adipose tissue in the body.
In similar fashion, insulin is also an anabolic hormone. Used by professional bodybuilders for years, insulin shuttles much needed nutrients into muscle cells following a strenuous strength training workout. Insulin’s anabolic edge can be obtained by consuming carbohydrates with a high glycemic index (i.e. a rating scale for carbohydrates that accounts for how rapidly absorbed the carbohydrate is) post workout. So you see ladies, armed with a little nutritional knowledge, you can be ready to face your man in the gym at any time.
It’s understandable that you may be discouraged about your results despite all of your efforts. This explains why your hubby’s thumb pressing remote control workout yields the same results as your 5K run. An exaggeration you say…yes it is. However, feel free to quote it the next time you want to fuss at your husband for achieving such great results.
