Tinnitus Ringing in the Ears Tinnitus Remedies

Tinnitus is a very irritating problem that affects millions of people. It is characterized by a ringing or swishing feeling in the ears that appears to come from deep inside the head. While this condition is not fatal on its own, it could be a symptom of a serious medical condition. For the most part, tinnitus is caused by exposure to loud noises, such as being close to a loud bang or explosion of some kind.

In addition to loud noises close to the ear, tinnitus can also be caused by a build up of wax in the eardrum. This causes the normal sounds of the body, which you don’t hear on a regular basis, appearing very much louder than they are. Fluid in the middle or inner ear, as well as infection can also bring on this condition.

The good news is that if you suffer from tinnitus there is help available. The first thing you should do is to visit your doctor for an examination. This involves a look inside the ear to make sure that there are no visible underlying causes. Sometimes the doctor may prescribe medication used to treat Vertigo, or an imbalance caused by infection in the inner ear. This is almost always the first course of action if you feel dizzy, nauseous or off-balance because of the ringing noises.

A hearing test may also be ordered because as we age the sense of hearing tends to decrease. This could be the cause of your problem. When all tests come back negative and the medication does not seem to solve the problem, the doctor will take the matter further by ordering CT scans of the brain. In a small number of cases, tinnitus has been a symptom of a brain tumor or some other serious medical condition.

As a rule there is no specific treatment for tinnitus if there are no underlying medical problems to be found and when the medication for Vertigo does not bring you any comfort. Usually, tinnitus clears up on its own after a while. There has been some success with using Niacin, a medication for lowering high cholesterol, in the treatment of this condition, but there are no clinical studies related to its success or failure by being used in this manner.

You can prevent tinnitus by making sure you wear proper protection on your ears when you are in areas where loud noises are common. When cleaning your ears, it is important that you be careful using cotton swabs because they can actually push the wax closer to the eardrum and cause it to impact.
