The Dangers and Side Effects of Vicodin

Vicodin is a drug that is used for controlling a lot of pain. Inside of this medicine, there is two drugs in it, one is acetaminophen, and the other hydrocodone. It is the hydrocodone in Vicodin that is the narcotic. One of the things you need to be aware of when taking this drug is alcoholic beverage intake. You need to avoid any alcoholic beverage at all costs when taking this medicine.

The problem with Hydrocodone is that it can be very addictive. This is a dangerous drug to give anyone that has had a noted history of drug abuse. Also, when the drug is prescribed for you, do not give it to anyone else. That is a very risky move and could actually prove fatal in some cases.

If you have an allergy to any drug, please tell you prescribing doctor. If you have any disorders such as Addison’s Disease or other adrenal gland problems, mental illnesses, scoliosis, low blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, brain tumors or other head injury, and also stomach, intestinal, or thyroid disorders, make sure that is noted by your doctor.

As far as pregnancy goes, this drug should not really be given. It can do harm to the baby and cause the child to have addiction problems, and be life-threatening.

One of the dangers of taking Vicodin is constipation problems. This is why it is most important to drink lots of water when taking this medication. Eat plenty of dietary fiber in your diet, and you should avoid laxatives while on Vicodin altogether.

Vicodin can change the chemistry of urine. So if you are having a urine test for any reason, make sure that this is noted on your history.

With Vicodin, there are many medication types that this drug can react badly with. If you are taking MAOI drugs, drugs for bladder or urine, antidepressants, medicines for irritable bowel syndrome, and any other types of medications, let your doctor know what these are. This is extremely important and can pose a danger if you do not have all other medicines covered with your doctor.

Vicodin should also be stopped before surgery. Anesthesia and Vicodin can form a deadly combination.

You shouldn’t drive a car or operate other types of machines while under the influence of Vicodin. Vicodin can seriously make you very sleepy and therefore impair your judgment in a big way. When you need to go places, have someone take you instead of taking the risk in a car yourself.

This drug can also cause some people to experience allergic reactions which are life-threatening. If your tongue swells, you have trouble breathing, and hives, seek emergency treatment since these are definite symptoms of an allergic response.

Other dangers and side effects may include heartbeat is too slow, convulsions, jaundice, dark urine, clay-colored stools, itching and problems with urination, and seizure activity, call the doctor at once. These effects are very serious and require attention by your doctor.

The side effects that are less serious are feelings of anxiety, feeling dizzy and drowsy, tinnitus which is ringing in the ears, dry mouth, and blurred vision.

If you forget to take a dosage of Vicodin, do NOT double the next one. Instead, take your next scheduled dose as recommended.
