Losing weight is never easy, which is why it can be hard to motivate yourself to try to shed the pounds, but there are so many benefits associated with losing weight that it is worth taking them into consideration before embarking on a weight-loss program. If you’re obese you are more likely to develop heart disease; to have a heart attack or stroke; to develop certain cancers; and to develop type 2 diabetes. You may also experience joint pain and backache and develop osteoarthritis, while you could find yourself with a condition known as sleep apnoea which causes you to stop breathing in your sleep.

Losing weight can therefore reduce these risks substantially and increase your life expectancy as a result. If you are able to lose 10 per cent of your body weight your health will benefit, and as the pounds drop off you will find it easier to move; your energy levels will increase; and you will generally be in better health.

Not only will you notice the benefits of losing weight for your physical health; you will also find that your mental health can improve too. Being overweight can leave you feeling depressed about your situation so that you feel hopeless and as if you have no control. Losing weight therefore puts you in control and because you are able to prove to yourself that you can lose weight on your own your self-esteem receives a boost, thus making you feel more confident.

You have more confidence in yourself because you know that you can do whatever you put your mind to, while being able to fit into smaller clothes and socialise with friends without feeling as though you are the odd-one-out helps you feel good as well. You are able to go shopping and easily find clothes that flatter you without having to go to plus-size shops. It is also nice to receive compliments about your appearance, rather than to be criticised for your size, so that you actually want to put yourself forward in social situations.

There are many benefits of losing weight, especially with regard to your physical and mental well-being, so that it is a good idea to implement lifestyle changes to help you shed a few pounds, if you need to, in order to obtain these benefits.
