Somatoform Disorder Symptoms

Somatoform disorder is really very hard to deal with since it all stems from a mind body connection. This disorder is very real to the person that has it, but yet, as testing is done to find out what’s wrong, there is nothing. The person that is affected becomes very pre-occupied about their health and constantly worries about what the problem is. The usual symptoms for which no cause can be found are:

Upset stomach. The person affected is always experiencing nausea and even vomiting. This seems to occur often in people with somatoform disorder.

A number of other gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, and abdominal cramps are also part of the problem.

People that have somatoform disorder are often very depressed and cannot seem to function well on a daily basis. They have trouble getting up and about most of the time, and instead try to find an escape route by sleeping a lot.

Conversion disorder which can be a part of somatoform disorder, is also sometimes pretty common in people that are experiencing things like paralysis, numbness and tingling in the extremities, yet testing reveals that this is something that should not be occurring.

Headaches and body aches are also found to be true in those that experience this type of problem. There are also a number of complaints when it comes to lack of sexual drive in a person.

It is quite common to have body dysmorphic disorder when a person has somatoform. In this disorder, people have trouble with their own self image, think they are ugly, and are very anti-social. People that have somatoform disorder also can carry a lot of these symptoms too.

Somatoform disorder symptoms may also start in the childhood years, sometimes as a form of anxiety from not wanting to attend school. Females are more prone to this condition than males are generally speaking.

Through research on somatoform disorder, many researchers feel that it stems from the wrong messages sent to the brain, and therefore, this is what causes the symptoms of this problem which no one can pin a diagnosis on.

It has also been found true that somatoform disorder has a tendency to run in families and gets passed on from one generation to the next.

The best that doctors can do for treating somatoform disorder is to treat the symptoms of the upset stomach and other gastrointestinal problems, along with giving suggestions for dealing with the pain.
