Should you Join a Gym

There are many different advantages and disadvantages to joining a fitness gym. For some, this is the best way to get in their daily exercise. For others, there might be a better way. Consider the following when deciding whether you should join a gym.

Advantages

One of the best advantages of joining a gym is that it gives you the opportunity to exercise, of course. Exercise is extremely important for your health. It lowers the risk of many serious conditions such as high blood pressure and stroke.

At a gym, you will find many different ways to exercise. You have access to many different machines, free weights and exercise classes. Other gyms offer even more special features such as water aerobics and an indoor track. Most people simply cannot replicate all of these different items in their homes.

You might find that you are more motivated to work out when you go to a gym. You may find it more interesting since there are so many different things that you can do. Every day your workout can be different.

A gym is wonderful for someone who likes to exercise with a lot of other people. For instance you might find it the most fun and motivational to be in a group exercise class.

Gyms offer the opportunity for social interaction. Many people enjoy going to the gym to talk to people. It can be a place that you can meet people such as new friends or even a potential mate. You may find people who are similar to you in that they are fitness minded.

You might not have room in your home to have any fitness equipment. For instance, if you have a very small apartment you may not even be able to fit in a weight machine. Or, you may not be able to exercise at home because there are other people there and it’s it too distracting. If you are the mother of a toddler, for example, and your fitness gym offers babysitting, an uninterrupted workout is convenient and an ideal way to take care of yourself and reduce stress.

Disadvantages

One major disadvantage of going to a fitness gym is that it can cost a lot of money. Many fitness gyms charge a substantial joining fee and then a monthly fee. This can really add up over the months. Many gyms sneak in other costs such as a maintenance fee. You might have to pay for certain things à la cart such as babysitting and special classes.

Commuting time to and from the gym can double the amount you need to set aside for your workouts. Additionally, you might have to wait for certain machines if the gym is very busy. If you have a busy schedule, this becomes an unaffordable luxury.

A lot of people do not like to exercise in front of others. You may feel self-conscious. You might feel that it is cleaner or more hygienic to only use your own equipment.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to joining a fitness gym. Weigh all of your options before deciding whether it’s beneficial to join a gym or exercise at home.
