Reiki, a Japanese form of stress reduction and relaxation, has been attributed to the late Dr. Mikao Usui. His discoveries and teachings are still closely protected today, and taught with the utmost respect.
Reiki, is a combination of two Japanese words. Rei which means God’s wisdom or Higher Power and ki which means life force energy. The energy of the client is addressed by a trained practitioner to allow for healing and strengthening the aura, or energy field that surrounds every living creature. There have been many accounts of instantaneous healings and miraculous recoveries in addition to the more common results of Reiki. This therapy has been used for a large modality of reasons, including easing stress, relieving pain, helping to treat physical ailments, and helping to address and eliminate emotional issues. The reaches of its help can go far beyond what the client may expect, and even see the benefits in other areas of his or her life.
In order to learn Reiki, one must complete at least the first of four Reiki degrees. First Degree Reiki teaches one how to use Reiki on himself as well as others. Second degree Reiki reinforces what has been learned, and continues practice. It also introduces the concept of distance healing and symbols. The third degree and Master Degree both incorporate the remaining symbols and further the education by receiving a healing attunement. The attunement is given by the teacher, and it allows for the student to become more open to the energy that is passing through him. Upon becoming a Reiki Teacher, the student will learn how to perform attunements on other individuals.
In a Reiki session, the client can be either physically with the practitioner, or treated from a distance. Either method is equally effective. The practitioner will often ‘scan’ the client to feel for areas that are more charged or active that need to be addressed. Depending on the practitioner, he may chose to gently lay his hands on the client in the more charged areas to help direct energy to the issue. However, it is not necessary to actually touch, as it is believed the energy is being addressed, and not necessarily the physical body itself. There are many practitioners that strictly stay above the body in the aura itself.
The experiences that one may have in a session can vary widely. Some individuals simply fall asleep for the entire period, and others may have very startling discoveries. It is not uncommon for one to have memories surface, emotions released or interesting visions as underlying issues are brought to the surface and released. There are many people that may break down into tears during the middle of a session, and not know exactly why. It is most likely due to an emotion that had been hidden behind a physical ailment or other emotion. One may experience physical effects such as warmth or heat in areas that are being treated. The client may also feel energy shift around the body, or any variety of sensations.
Sessions can typically last anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour. After receiving a treatment, it’s wise to drink lots of water. The energy typically creates a detox effect, and water will help flush the system. Also, it is a good idea to avoid an harsh chemicals or situations for the rest of the day. A good hot bath with sea salt will also aid in the detoxification of the body, and allow for further relaxation. Over the course of the next few days one may notice the release of emotions and further changes in his life.
The tradition of Reiki has been highly protected over the years, and its benefits are now becoming more widely accepted. There are many health programs that now include such energy therapy in the treatment of cancer and other diseases. Keeping an open mind, that is free of expectations will allow for a positive experience during a Reiki session. Discover the impact this alternative therapy can have on your life.
