Reasons to Avoid Extreme Diets

Extreme diets are those which encourage you to abandon all your usual eating habits and embrace radical changes for a relatively short period of time so that you can lose weight rapidly. Instead of reducing your calorie intake by adopting sensible eating habits, you basically end up swapping one set of bad habits for another. When you’re following an extreme diet, your entire focus is given to losing weight quickly and so you fail to see the bigger picture and learn to incorporate eating practices that will actually enable you to maintain a healthy weight.

It is therefore worth avoiding extreme diets if you want to learn to control your weight once and for all. Extreme diets may help you to lose lots of weight quickly, but because the measures you have to take are so drastic the chances are you won’t be able to follow the rules and regulations for long, especially when they are so complicated. You’re told you can’t eat this and you can’t eat that, so in the end you find yourself rebelling and eating whatever you feel like. This generally leads to weight gain and you may even end up gaining more weight than you lost.

Clearly, this is not good for your well-being. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where your weight yo-yos up and down, something which extreme diets can lead to. You might enjoy watching the weight fall off whenever you step on the scales, but you also tend to feel as though you have no energy, which makes you miserable and irritable, whilst also affecting your concentration levels. Plus, when you start to regain the weight, which you invariably do, you feel bad about yourself and your self-esteem takes a nose dive, which may simply exacerbate your weight struggles if it is food you turn to when you’re feeling down.

Extreme diets might help you to lose weight fast, but is there really any point if you don’t bother to re-educate yourself about how to eat properly in order to maintain your ideal weight? Starving your body for weeks and months at a time means that it won’t only be fat that you lose, but also water and muscle mass. When you grow tired of your diet you might start to binge on food and consume too many calories which your body is obviously going to be desperate to cling on to.

Losing weight too quickly isn’t particularly good for you, anyway, and can lead to diarrhoea and gallstones, whilst you may also be left with excess skin. Nobody wants to hear that the most effective way to ensure weight loss success is to make realistic changes to your eating and exercise habits so that you can lose weight at a gradual rate, but that is how it is. In order to achieve long-term weight control you have to be prepared to monitor your calorie intake and exercise regularly, something which extreme diets fail to prepare you for.
