Natural Ways to Combat Vomiting and Diarrhea

Everyone is familiar with the dizzy, sweaty, stomach churning feeling that can be associated with nausea and diarrhea. And when in the midst of a bout of flu it can be difficult to remember that diarrhea and vomiting are one of the many ways that our bodies help us expel toxins and bacteria that are often causing the illness. Luckily, if you are unable to tolerate these unpleasant effects or if they have occurred for more than 24 hours there are several natural remedies that can provide relief.

Helpful Remedies for Nausea and Vomiting:

The first thing is to remember that often times allowing yourself to vomit can often rid your stomach of what it is trying to expel, so if you feel the need do not try to keep it down. Often one episode of vomiting can be the best remedy. However, if it does not help or if the nausea has been going on for a few hours there are several ways you can alleviate your symptoms.

Ginger root is perhaps the best medicine for an upset or nauseous stomach due to the flu, chemotherapy, motion sickness or pregnancy. Ginger has been used for thousands of years to good effect for the treatment of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and even colic. Ginger can be eaten in slices if tolerated or can be brewed into a tea by letting peeled sections brew in hot water for about five minutes. If fresh ginger is unavailable you can always reach for ginger beer or even good old ginger ale.

Another popular herb to use is peppermint, which can be taken in tea form, hard candy or even gum. Peppermint is best for those who are suffering from food related indigestion. If you have a good amount of herbs in your cupboard a tea made from chamomile, fennel, licorice root and peppermint can be very soothing.

For those who suffer from nausea or vomiting related to ulcers using a mixture which contains slippery elm can be helpful. Slippery elm root creates a coating on the stomach which can help protect it from aggravating stomach acids. Mix a couple of tea spoons of the powdered root with milk, water or juice and drink it a few times a day to provide relief.

Remember that rest and clear fluids when feeling nauseous are the best things you can do. Often times lying down in a quiet area and focusing on your breathing can calm an uneasy stomach. For anyone who has been vomiting trying to replenish your system and balance out the fluids in your body will be important.

Diarrhea:

If you are suffering from diarrhea it is best to not try to stop it unless you begin to suffer from other side effects such as dehydration or mild bleeding due to irritation. Letting your body rid itself of bacteria and toxins is best. However, if diarrhea has gone on for more than 24 hours or is causing other ailments you can always use a natural remedy to try to stop it or calm down your system. Remember that anyone suffering from diarrhea should intake clear fluids such as water or tea frequently to help the body keep electrolytes in balance and prevent dehydration.

If you need to take something it is best to start with a tea that contains astringent herbs such as argrimony or black berry bark. If this is not something you keep in your kitchen cupboards then using cinnamon and ginger brewed into a tea can also work.

Drinking fiber (such as psysillium) or taking a few tablets of the herb in supplement form can help by bulking up the stool and allowing the body to process more naturally. It helps to absorb the water that is often not absorbed during diarrhea episodes.

Bland foods such as bananas and rice should be eaten by those suffering from any form of stomach or bowel upset and continued for a few days to allow the system to fully recover. Taking acidophilus pills twice a day can also be helpful in restoring natural flora to the stomach and intestines.

As with all illness, rest and fluids are your best medicine. If the above remedies do not provide relief after several days or should your symptoms get worse it is always recommended to contact your doctor to prevent possibly complications that can arise from dehydration and to make sure there is nothing more serious that could be underlying the symptoms.
