Natural Remedies to Treat Bruises and Sprains

There are several natural remedies that can assist in the healing of both bruises and sprains. When choosing a remedy, keep in mind that you should be diligent to follow the directions on the package for best results.

A bruise is an indication that the soft tissue has been slightly damaged. If left alone, bruises will heal on their own within 2 weeks. You’ll notice that the color of the bruise changes as it heals, this is a good sign that the body is breaking down and metabolizing the blood cells in your skin. If you notice that your bruise is turning greenish or yellow, then that’s a sign that it is almost completely healed. It may turn a light brown before it goes away completely.

Whether the bruise is bothering you or not, there are natural and safe remedies that you can use to expedite the healing processes.

Treat bruises naturally:

A popular homeopathic remedy for bruises is Arnica Montana. It can be purchased at natural health markets. It comes in tincture form or as pellets or tablets that dissolve under the tongue. Arnica Montana can also be purchased in gel or cream form to apply topically to treat bruises and swelling.

Witch Hazel can also be applied to the area where the bruise is located. Witch Hazel helps to disperse the blood and encourage the healing process to begin. Before applying Arnica cream or gel, it would be beneficial to clean the area with Witch Hazel because it has astringent, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

A bruise can often accompany a sprain because blood vessels are often ruptured when a sprain occurs. Sprains can be caused by something as simple as falling and twisting your ankle. You are probably aware that it is often recommended to alternate between ice packs and heat to reduce swelling, but there are also natural remedies that you can take internally and apply externally to treat sprains.

Treat sprains naturally:

Take a supplement of Bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapple. Research has shown that Bromelain can help heal sprains because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

Homeopathic remedies are also helpful when treating sprains. If using ice packs help to alleviate the pain, try using Arnica Montana both internally and externally. If you find discomfort by using ice but feel relief with heat, try taking the homeopathic Bellis Perennis internally.

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and can also help alleviate pain. You can find Turmeric in capsule form at your local natural market. If taken internally, it will help to reduce pain and swelling. You can also create a paste and apply it directly to the sprained area. To make a paste, simply use enough water to form a paste with the turmeric powder. Be sure to make enough to cover the affected area. Leave on for 20 to 60 minutes. Keep in mind that turmeric will stain fabric.

Whichever remedy you choose, remember to drink plenty of water, as proper hydration is required for overall wellness. Give your body time to heal, but if you are concerned in anyway, you should contact your health care provider.
