Natural and Herbal Remedies for Back Pain

While the majority of people experience back pain occasionally, the exact cause of back pain is often unknown. Despite the fact that back pain is a mystery of sorts, backaches usually resolve themselves within 4 to 6 weeks. In the interim, instead of reaching for an over the counter pain reliever, try a natural or herbal remedy for soothing pain relieving results.

Valerian

Even though Valerian is often thought of as an herbal remedy used to promote sleep, its relaxing qualities can provide pain relief for a backache brought on by overworked and spastic muscles. Muscles in pain have a tendency to tense up. Compounds in Valerian help to relax smooth muscle cells. Relaxed muscles tend to heal faster. Valerian also quiets the part of the nervous system that responds to pain. The sedating quality of Valerian will also help you sleep at night. A recommended dosage of Valerian is to take two 250 milligram capsules four times a day or 20 drops of the tincture every two hours.

Turmeric

The turmeric spice is commonly used in Indian dishes to spice them up a bit. You will be pleasantly surprised that in addition to pleasing your taste buds, turmeric can be used to relieve a variety of aches and pains. Deep inside the yellow orange turmeric root is a compound called curcumin, which has strong anti-inflammatory properties, making it an ideal solution for back pain. It works in much the same way as ibuprofen or cortisone. If you are going to try turmeric for back pain, don’t reach for the spice bottle however. It is best to take in capsule form for back pain. Take 400 milligrams in capsule form three times a day for relief.

Cayenne

There are a multitude of creams and ointments available that contain cayenne compounds called capsaicin. These creams and ointments work with your body to release pain. Use a standardized ointment that contains 0.075 or 0.025 percent capsaicin. It may take several applications to get the full benefit. Use three or four times a day for relief. Make sure to wash your hands after use. Never use on a rash or open sore on the body as well.

Willow

The leaves of the willow tree were used in ancient Rome for pain relief, while the bark of the willow tree was often prescribed for sciatic pain. This old fashioned remedy still works today on pain and inflammation. The active ingredient in willow is salicin, the chemical that was isolated in the 1800’s to manufacture aspirin. You may be wondering, why not take an aspirin? Simply put, because willow will not cause stomach upset, the way aspirin does. Willow capsules are generally the recommended way to take willow. Take one or two capsules three times a day for relief.

While most back pain responds well to herbal and natural remedies, see your doctor if you experience fever, pain that is worse when lying down, or if pain persists for more than a week.
