How to Treat Menopause with Aromatherapy

While menopause is a natural transition in life for women, natural doesn’t mean that the process is always easy. Symptoms of menopause can range from night sweats and hot flashes to depression, anxiety and vaginal changes. Aromatherapy offers a unique alternative to conventional medicine when it comes to treating menopause symptoms and might make the transition just a little bit easier for you. If you continue to be plagued with bothersome symptoms of menopause, consult your physician for more conventional treatment options.

Many essential oils can be used in aromatherapy to assist the body in this transition. Not only can essential oil ease the symptoms, they can also help to prevent some symptoms. Some essential oil contain hormone-like components that mimic hormones in the female body, while others can help to relieve water retention, flushing and sweats. Other essential oils can help to treat emotional symptoms that may accompany menopause. You will want to give the effects of aromatherapy some time to kick in. This may involve a few months of consistent use. Keep a journal to track which treatments work well for you.

Nights sweats that prevent you from sleeping can be treated effectively with a variety of essential oils. Some of these include: lavender, chamomile, basil, rose and sandalwood. Simply place a few drops of any of these essential oils onto your pillowcase before retiring, and they will assist you in falling asleep. Likewise any of these essential oils can be placed on a cloth handkerchief and inhaled right before bedtime. Aromatic baths also help to relax and promote sleep. Add 4 drops of lavender essential oil, 3 drops of marjoram essential oil, 3 drops of lime essential oil into warm bath water. Soak for at least 10 minutes to receive the full benefit.

Hot flashes can be relieved by a quick inhalation of peppermint essential oil. Keep some on a cloth handkerchief with you throughout the day, and inhale as needed. Peppermint has a cooling and refreshing effect on the nervous system. Massage oils that contain aromatic essential oils can promote sleep. Make a massage oil with 4 tbsp. of vegetable oil, 1 tsp. of evening primrose oil, 10 drops of lavender essential oil and 6 drops of grapefruit essential oil. Combine and massage into the neck and chest area nightly to relieve hot flashes and promote sleep.

Treat depression and anxiety caused by menopause with bergamot, clary sage, grapefruit, jasmine, lavender rose and ylang ylang. A few drops of any of these can be inhaled as needed to improve your mood. In addition, a few drops of any of these essential oils can be added to warm bath water or a massage carrier oil such as sweet almond oil for a therapeutic massage.

Regardless of how you use essential oils, aromatherapy is an effective and natural way to tackle some of the symptoms associated with menopause. As always, consult your physician if you are experiencing difficult symptoms.
