We’ve all been there. You are trying to lose weight and you have got yourself on a strict diet. You stay strong all day long while you are at work, but once you get home – forget it. The cravings become unbearable and you find yourself turning to junk food that you know will throw your calorie counts off the charts. So what happens to us in the late afternoon that turns our iron will to tinfoil?
Well, for one thing, you may need to re-evaluate your calorie count in the first place. Diets that are too restrictive can lead to your blood sugar levels dropping in the late afternoon which can lead to major cravings for sugar and carbohydrates and other foods on the no-no list. To avoid your blood sugar crashing leading to major cravings, try eating smaller meals or snacks throughout the day so that your body never has a chance to crash.
Also, it is important to listen to your body and to educate yourself about what certain cravings mean. Cravings are your body’s way of telling you that it is lacking in some area. Now, it may be that you have gotten yourself hooked on sugar which is leading to major sugar cravings, but sometimes these cravings can be satisfied by giving your body some glucose in the form of fruit. It satisfies the need for something sweet and sends a check mark to the craving for sugar.
By far the best way to avoid binging on junk food when you get home from work is to prevent your body from becoming this hungry in the first place. Too often people restrict too much and wind up with their body going into starvation mode. You are ready to consume an entire grocery store because you are so hungry after barely eating anything all day. Not only is this not healthy, it is also not conducive to weight loss. Your body thinks it needs to store everything because it doesn’t know when it will be fed again. This is definitely not ideal if you are trying to drop a few pounds.
To keep your blood sugar from dipping too low causing major hunger and cravings, set up your diet plan with your doctor so that you are snacking every few hours or so on something healthy. This will keep your stomach from feeling empty and keep your sugar from dropping too low making post work binge fests a thing of the past.
