How to Stop Snoring

Snoring is a common problem for many people. It not only affects you, but those around you as well. It can make you embarrassed, irritable, lethargic and worn out from not enough sleep. Here are some home remedies for snoring that may help to make your life easier.

Change the way you sleep

You are more apt to snore harder and louder if you sleep on your back. Start sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees. Use a pillow that supports your neck well.

Clear the nasal passages

If your nasal passages are blocked while you are sleeping, you will naturally breathe through your mouth, making you more likely to snore. Clear your nasal passages before you go to bed by using a nasal spray and then placing some mentholatum or Vicks under your nose. This will keep the air you are breathing moist and help keep your nasal passages unstopped. Other options are to sleep with a humidifier in the room or to use nasal strips.


Be very careful what you eat, especially during the two or three hours before you go to bed. Stay away from mucous producing foods, such as milk, that have a tendency to block the nasal passages or obstruct the passageway at the back of the throat. Avoid drinking alcohol because alcohol causes the tissue at the back of the throat to relax, making it more difficult to breathe.


If you are overweight and you snore, it is time to get serious about losing weight. The excess weight can cause you to have more fatty tissue at the back of your throat. As you lose weight, that tissue will grow smaller, and it will unblock the air passages in the throat. Interestingly, if you sing a lot, it will help the muscles in your throat to become tighter, making you less apt to snore at night.


Certain aromas help with snoring by helping you sleep better or by keeping your nasal passages clear. Two of these herbs are lavender and marjoram. Simply take the lid off, and set the bottles on your night stand so that you smell them during the night.


You can massage both of your pinkie fingers. Hold the first joint of the pinky firmly for several minutes. Do the same thing with the knuckle joint. Repeat on the other hand. This is a home remedy that is supposed to stop snoring completely.
