I had been an anorexic in reverse. Like the girl who looked in the mirror and still saw the fat girl, I continued to see the skinny girl, age 25, size 6. The fact that my pants were tighter and I had to keep the zipper engaged by using a safety pin did not seem to hit home right away. When the pants began to pull into my crotch and it wasn’t very lady-like to “adjust” myself, I knew it was time to begin to exercise, but where? I hate to exercise. I really did not want to exercise at all.
Choosing where to exercise is almost as important as choosing a mate. After all, the reality is you need to make a long term commitment. You want to make the right choice. You want it to last.

I tried them all as is evidenced by the closet that houses these items and whose door can no longer close. In short, you need to exercise with a friend. It doesn’t matter what you decide to do: walking your neighborhood, Curves, the local YMCA, or your local popular fitness center. Do it with someone and you are more likely to stick with it. My husband has been working out every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for thirty years. Why? He meets his two best friends. It is a social event. The workout is secondary to them, but the results are primary. They are 50 something men who have the bodies of thirty something.
Not wanting to be a fifty something who looked like a sixty something, I followed my husband’s lead. I coerced two co-workers to join me. The closest exercise joint was the local YMCA. It has not been easy, but it has been successful. Making exercising part of the work day, going straight from work to the facility in the town you work, makes it part of “the job.” Doing it with friends makes it fun. We often spend so much time laughing that we almost fall off the treadmill or whatever machine we have chosen to work on that day.
I have lost seven pounds and have regained my self esteem. Now when I look in the mirror I may not see that skinny girl; I see a woman who is proud of how she looks at fifty-six.
