How to Follow a Low Calorie Diet

A low calorie diet can be a great way to lose weight. It can be fairly simple to follow and it can work very well. There are different things you can do in order to follow such a diet. The following are tips for losing weight in this way.

Decide on the amount of calories you want to consume

You will want to be careful when doing this. A lot of people make the mistake of actually going too low with their calories. If you do this, you may lose the weight fast but then it is likely to come right back on because it is something you cannot maintain. In addition, if you go too low your body may go into starvation mode and then it might be more difficult to lose the weight. Furthermore, if you go extremely low you could end up with an eating disorder and the many related health issues. There are many guidelines and recommendations for the amount of calories you should consume. It will depend on your gender, activity level, weight and other factors.

Choose low calorie foods

Of course, in a low calorie diet you will need to choose low calorie foods. There are some foods that are often low calorie, such as vegetables. There are also many foods that are specifically targeted for dieters such as Lean Cuisine television meals, Weight Watchers products, Light and Fit Yogurt and other items like that. You need to look at the packaging of the different food items to find out what the calories are. If it is an item such as a fruit or something else that might not have the calories listed on it, then you should consider getting a guidebook that will list the calories in different food items.

Pay attention to portions

You will want to be very careful with the portions of food that you take. Many times we eat far more than a serving in one meal. This is especially true with foods such as pasta and bread, and the calories can add up very quickly. You may want to have a scale to weigh your food so that you can calculate the calories exactly.

Stay away from junk food, sodas and other high calorie items

As much as possible, you should stay away from high calorie items such as junk food. A single fast food meal may contain half of your daily recommended calories or more. Also be very careful at restaurants. Many restaurants will list the healthier items, so this may be an option. You should still be careful, however. Many times, these foods are healthier but are still not low calorie.
