How to Choose the right Orthodontist

There are several ways you can choose a good orthodontist whether it is for yourself or for your child. Many adults are having their teeth straightened with braces, so age is not a factor when it comes to finding the best orthodontist. Hopefully, you are established with a good General Dentist, however if not, you must find a good dentist to guide you in your search.

A general dental check-up is necessary to determine if the patient is a candidate for orthodontics. A complete series of x-rays are needed to examine the teeth and check for any issues which would prevent the patient from pursuing orthodontic treatment. Once the dental check-up is complete and the patient is in good dental health, procedures can begin for orthodontic treatment.

*General Dentist referral

Begin with a referral from the general dentist. This is the best way to find a good orthodontist. Your dentist has experience with this type of referral and will have a few choices for you to research. When you have received a few names of orthodontists, you can begin your search. Trust your dentist to give you names of those he/she find to be reputable and established in the area. Remember to visit your general dentist every six months during your orthodontic treatment for proper dental health.

*Neighbors/Friends

Word of mouth is one of the best referrals you can obtain. Because orthodontics are specialists, they will have an established reputation. In your circle of neighbors/friends you will find several people who have had braces or who know someone who has undergone this procedure. A successful result will be the best reference. There are several important questions you should ask:

Where is the location of the office? You will want to be able to have a minimal amount of travel time to reach your appointments. If a wire snaps or you have any other issues, you will want to be able to reach the office in a minimal amount of time.

How is the office staff? This is important as you will be making frequent visits and establish a close relationship with the staff. A friendly staff will give the patient a great deal of comfort during the years of treatment. Orthodontics usually takes between 2-4 years for completion.

Is the orthodontist gentle and concerned about his/her patients? A good Doctor/patient relationship is also very important for the success of this treatment. You will want to choose an orthodontist that shows personal care to his/her patients and one who has a caring and understanding manner. This treatment is a long-term commitment and a good relationship with the orthodontist is important.

*American Dental Society

The local county, Dental Society can give you referrals as well. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the orthodontists in your area. This is a dependable society, whom is unbiased and professional. Also, check to make sure the orthodontist is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists.
