It can be a struggle to control your weight in a world where food is readily available and pretty cheap. The food on offer is packed full of ingredients and chemicals that leave you wanting more, so you end up eating more than you need because it tastes so good and your body craves it. As well as eating too much food you can easily find yourself avoiding any kind of physical activity when you work in a job that requires very little energy expenditure and spend your spare time watching television. However, weight control is important if you want to reduce your chances of developing serious health problems as you get older.
If you want to control your weight you really have to practise moderation. This is usually easier said than done because when you’re surrounded by an array of scrumptious, calorific foods it isn’t always possible to say ‘no’. You may try to restrain yourself, but basically you want to give into temptation and when everyone else is eating what they want without thinking about the consequences, why shouldn’t you? However, you can’t expect to remain slim and healthy if you eat whatever you want and as much of it as you can because you will simply be consuming too many calories.
It’s particularly difficult to control your weight when you lead a sedentary lifestyle and so it is always worth making time for exercise to enable yourself to eat the foods you love without worrying about the possibility of weight gain. Even then, though, you have to bear in mind just how much you’re eating. You don’t have to live on lettuce leaves and tomatoes to keep your weight down – in fact, it would be unhealthy to try to do so. However, you have to think about the kinds of food you’re eating and whether they are good for you or not.
Of course, you should feel free to treat yourself to chocolate, cakes, cookies, chips and fast food, but this type of food should remain a ‘treat’. If you keep eating chocolate throughout the day you will quickly consume more calories than you require, which will result in weight gain if you’re not careful. You can still eat chocolate and control your weight, but you just have to remember how many calories are contained within the bar you’re eating so that you can stop yourself from going overboard.
By embracing moderation, rather than eating what you want at all times, you should find that controlling your weight isn’t all that tough, but you do have to stick with it.
