If you’re looking to lose weight it helps if you love sport. If you have a passion for sport it doesn’t take much to motivate yourself to exercise because you get a buzz from getting active and maybe even competing against other people. When you enjoy doing sport your main focus isn’t on losing weight, but enjoying yourself, getting fitter and possibly winning! Thus, losing weight becomes a way of improving your performance, not just getting healthier and looking good, which can keep you moving in the right direction.
In order to lose weight you obviously have to burn more calories than you consume and many people have a tendency to focus on diet alone, rather than considering the role that exercise can play as well. You certainly shouldn’t ignore exercise, though, as it can be incredibly useful for increasing your calorie expenditure and thus help you to lose weight. Plus, if you get into the habit of doing exercise you will find it much easier to keep the weight off once you reach your goal.
There are plenty of sports to choose from and so you are bound to find something that suits your requirements. It might be tempting to tell yourself that you’re not fit enough to take up a particular sport, but everyone has to start somewhere and you usually find that different sports have their own clubs that cater for people of all different ages and abilities. You therefore have a good chance of finding other people with similar goals as yourself, which may help you to stay motivated to achieve them.
You can choose activities that you are able to do alone, such as running, or take up a team sport, such as basketball, or do a combination of different sports. There are so many options that you’re pretty much spoiled for choice, but at least you can’t rely on the excuse that doing exercise is boring. Physical activity is only boring if you have a negative attitude towards it from the outset.
If you’re positive about all that sport can bring to your life, it will be much easier to motivate yourself to do it, which will be of benefit to your physical and mental health, while bringing you ever closer to your weight-loss goal. Although a love of sport won’t automatically help you to lose weight, if you enjoy yourself when keeping active you’ll want to do it as often as you can, which means you are able to burn significantly more calories than you would if you were just sitting down twiddling your thumbs.
