Home Remedy Elixir for Flu and Colds

There are several different variations of home remedies that can help with cold and flu symptoms. Most of them include one or more of the following ingredients: pineapple juice, lemon juice, ginger, cayenne pepper, honey and garlic.

All six of these ingredients, when put together, make a super tonic that helps knock out flu and cold symptoms. It’s even been touted as Nature’s Flu Shot.

The recipe for this supertonic is:
3 cups of pineapple juice
1 cup of lemon juice (or the juice from six lemons)
2 tbsps of honey
2 tsps of ground ginger
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1 whole garlic bulb (finely chopped or minced)

Each one of these ingredients bring their own cold and flu fighting guns to the table.

Pineapple juice is high in vitamin C. One serving, a cup in U.S. measurements, provides one hundred percent of an adult’s daily vitamin C requirements. Pineapple juice also is packed full of cancer fighting antioxidants and a special ingredient, Bromelain, which is only found in pineapples and papayas. Pineapple juice helps thin mucus to help clear congestions and the bromelain helps calm the coughing. Bromelain has also been known to help with respiratory illnesses such as, bronchitis, hay fever, asthma and pneumonia. It is an anti-inflammatory and kills bad bacteria and helps fight infections. It also helps calm the aches and pains associated with the flu.

Lemon juice is also high in vitamin C, which it is very important for maintaining a fully functional immune system, aiding digestion, fighting cancer, helping wounds to heal faster and can even help to prevent heart failure. Lemon juice is a blood purifier and helps rid the body of toxins. It helps the body fight colds and the flu. Lemon juice also helps with asthma, it helps the body revitalize, and helps with nausea.

Honey has antibacterial and antioxidant qualities that help with building the body’s immune system. It’s also helps sooth sore throats and calm coughs that often come with the flu. It also works as a sleep aid and getting lots of rest is important when fighting the flu and/or cold.

Ginger has been used for more than 4000 years for medicinal purposes. It is known for it’s ability to help with nausea, vomiting and other gastrointestinal problems. Ginger also has been recommended for head and body aches.

Cayenne pepper is sometimes called the king of herbs because of it’s long list of health helpful qualities. Cayenne pepper can help with heart and stomach problems. The capsaicin in cayenne pepper stimulates secretions that help loosen mucus in the nose and sinuses to help with breathing. It also promotes sweating which helps with colds and the flu. It has Vitamin A, or beta-carotene, which helps against invading pathogens and builds a stronger immune system.

Garlic is the most powerful of all the ingredients in this tonic. The amount may seem extreme but the ability garlic has to counteract the flu symptoms is worth the bite that it brings to this elixir. Not only does garlic have antibiotic properties, but it has antibacterial properties as well. Garlic, like all of the other ingredients, help build your immune system for fighting off the flu symptoms. Garlic also has antiviral and antifungal properties that help treat flu symptoms. If used on a regular basis, garlic might help prevent the flu or colds from even getting started.

To make this natural flu/cold elixir, put all of the ingredients into a blender, puree them and place in a container that can be put in the refrigerator. Drink one cup of this mixture every four hours until symptoms disappear. These may not seem like they would go good together, but flavor of these combined forces is not bad. It does pack a little bit of a spicy bite, but it’s results are worth it.
