When I come to work, people look at my cup and ask me “what is that.” I tell them “it’s a green smoothie.” Naturally the next question is what is a green smoothie? Quite simply, a green smoothie is a smoothie made up of leafy greens and fruits. Although green in color (most cases) it taste delicious and the health benefits are simply amazing.

The USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) recommends 3-5 servings of vegetables a day. A serving can be 1 cup of raw leafy vegetables, ½ cup of other vegetables raw or cooked and ¾ cup of vegetable juice. Honestly, how many people do you know who are getting 3-5 servings of vegetables a week let alone a day. Greens are also the healthiest in their rawest form, so after you cook them they lose a lot of their health benefits.

Did you know the number one recommended way to prevent cancer is to eat your greens? Greens have what scientist and doctors call phytochemicals. These phytochemicals are essential in preventing cancer and also fighting cancer if you have it. Adding a green smoothie to your meals will effectively reduce your risk of cancer.

Low on energy? Green smoothie to the rescue. Since greens are packed with a lot of nutrients and vitamins that your body craves, you will get an energy boost that’s better than drinking a red bull. Plus it will be permanent. Our bodies get energy from the processed food and sugar that we digest. By drinking a green smoothie daily, your body will get the natural sugars in the fruits and greens. Trust me when I say there is a huge difference between processed sugar and natural sugar.

Trying to lose those few extra pounds? Green smoothies are packed with natural fiber that your body needs to keep a healthy colon. Many experts say you need a bowel movement 2-3 times per day. Well a green smoothie will definitely help you achieve regular bowel movements that keep the body free of toxins and digested food. Fiber also decreases your cravings for sweets and other unhealthy snacks.

There are many, many more healthy benefits to drinking green smoothies such as stabilizing your blood sugar, increase in libido, detoxification of the body, increases your body metabolism, aids the body in fighting arthritis. One of the best part of drinking green smoothies is that children will love them and won’t have a clue as to how good for them it really is. Here are a couple of personal favorites.


1 cup frozen strawberries

1 cup baby spinach

1 banana

3 cups of sweet almond milk

•Mixed fruits and kale

1 cup frozen mixed fruits (strawberry, peaches, mango, pineapple)

1 cup of kale

3 cups of pure apple juice

For best results in making a green smoothie, blend your greens with your liquids first until creamy, then add your fruits. You can add more fruits or greens depending on your taste. Once you get the hang of things, you can come up with some delicious mixes with different fruits and greens.
