The winter months mean two things; the holiday season and the common cold, and both of them are inevitable. Here are several vitamins and minerals to help you beat the common cold and help make your holidays enjoyable.

When it comes to boosting your immune system, foods rich in zinc are the perfect choice. When you are sick, your immune system has to work over time to expel the germs from your body. Zinc rich foods like eggs, crab, fish, or liver are the perfect way to supply your body with what it needs.

Vitamin C
Another way to build up and strengthen your immune system during a cold is to make sure you body has a supply of Vitamin C. This vitamin does the job and helps your bodies fight against the germ invaders. When your nose becomes stuffy, make sure to drink your share of juices and eat fresh fruit and vegetables. Keep an eye on the juice you drink, you do not want to drink fruit juice that is weighed down by excessive amounts of sugar.

These two vitamins often play a major role in fighting off the common cold by ridding the body of harmful viruses and bacteria. Vitamin A & E also help by protecting the mucous membranes in your system. The next time you feel the start of a cold coming on; make sure to pick up foods rich in these vitamins, like spinach, kale, squash, broccoli, nuts, peas, beans, carrots, and berries.

In recent years, there have been several studies that have shown this mineral has been effective in strengthening our immune system when it is under attack. Foods rich with selenian are nuts, seafood, meats, and poultry.

When discussing foods rich in vitamins and minerals that can help fight the common cold, garlic is one of the most overlooked items. Allicin, one of the active components in garlic, is able to neutralize viruses by essentially blocking the enzymes that would lead to the infection. Make sure to sprinkle a little bit of fresh garlic in your soup or on your vegetables the next time you feel the start of a cold coming on.

Last but most certainly not least is water. Your body is going to be stressed enough as it uses it resources to fight off the germs. As a result your body can become dehydrated if you do not drink enough liquids. You can chose to drink it straight or maybe add some flavor to it by making your favorite hot tea. Not only will the warm liquid feel good going down your sore throat, your immune system will gain a boost from the anti-oxidants posed in most teas.
