First Aid for Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke

Like dehydration, heat stroke can be caused by high levels of heat and not enough fluids… it is like a severe form of dehydration, and can be life threatening.

For this reason, it is vitally important that someone suffering from heat stroke is treated immediately, or it could result in permanent damage or even death. So if someone close to you is suffering from heat stroke, contact the proper authorities IMMEDIATELY. In the meantime, there are some thing you can do to help.

– Get the person indoors – This obviously gets them out of the heat and sun and gives them a better chance of cooling off.

– Remove clothing and gently apply cool water to the skin – Follow this with fanning, and it can help stimulate sweating, which is vital in lowering the body temperature of someone that had a heat stroke.

– Apply ice packs, especially to the groin and armpits – Again, this will help to cool the body down.

– Have the person lie down – It’s also a good idea to elevate their feet.

So as you can see, suffering from heat stroke can quickly turn into a life or death situation, which is why proper treatment is necessary. Contact authorities immediately and perform these measures and you can help lessen the damage… if you do this a greater damage can be avoided.
