If you’re overweight or obese you’ve probably picked up some bad habits along the way that have caused you to put on weight, but which have become such an integral part of your routine that you don’t even consider that cutting them out could help you lose a few pounds. Your lifestyle is how you live your day-to-day life, and if you eat too much food and do too little exercise, then clearly this needs to change if you want to lose some weight. Many people aren’t prepared to make adjustments to their lifestyle, though, as they enjoy eating whatever they like and lounging around, which means they have to accept being fat.
However, being fat isn’t particularly fun and so you can find yourself on diet after diet trying to lose weight because you don’t want to just lie down and accept the fact you’re fat. You want to lose weight so you don’t have to constantly worry about your health and so you can look good in clothes but, at the same time, you enjoy going out drinking with your friends and snuggling up on the sofa with a glass of wine in one hand and a slab of chocolate in the other. When you’re convinced you have to give up doing your favourite things in order to lose weight it is not particularly surprising if you find it hard to motivate yourself to change your situation.
It can be tempting to follow a diet that offers you the chance to lose lots of weight rapidly because actually being able to see the results seems to prove that depriving yourself works. If you only have to follow a restrictive diet for a few weeks at a time you can usually stick to it because you feel your clothes growing looser, while you are constantly looking forward to the day when your diet ends and you can get back to eating normally. Your idea of eating normally, though, isn’t likely to help you keep off the weight, and so as soon as you go back to eating whatever you feel like the pounds will creep back on.
If fad diets don’t help you to lose weight in the long run there is no alternative but to change your lifestyle, since this is the most effective way to ensure that any weight you do lose will stay off. It might be harder to get into a routine at first, especially if your weight loss isn’t as dramatic as it would have been had you gone on a diet, but when the pounds start falling off and you are able to appreciate feeling and looking good it won’t be so difficult to stick with in the long term.
