When we fill up our car we put in the best quality fuel. The performance of our car is important to us and we want it to run at peak levels. Why then do we put poor quality food into our bodies resulting in poor performance for the most vital system of all our ourselves? To get healthy we must adopt healthy eating habits so our bodies run the way our car does.

The Importance of Healthy Eating

When we consume good food such as fruits, vegetables, whole-grains, water, fish, lean meat, nuts, and seeds we provide our body with the fuel it needs to get us through the day. These foods contain the vital vitamins and mineral we need to sustain the functions of our bodies systems. When we get off track and resume unhealthy eating our body can’t perform at the optimum levels and we can gain weight due to unwanted calories that the body can’t use. When we eat an apple the body recognizes that food as a good fuel source and can metabolize and use all the vitamins and minerals inside that food . When we eat a doughnut for example all we get is a quick burst of energy from the sugar in the food and there is very little that the body can actually use so it stores the food as fat.

In today’s modern society people face more pressure and stress then ever before. With a busy lifestyle it is even more important to fuel up with good quality food so you can meet the challenges of the day. If you eat poorly you just won’t have the energy to do things properly and you may be more prone to make mistakes in your work due to lack of energy. Since food is the fuel for the body it makes sense to fill it properly so it can perform in those stressful situations.

Healthy eating can not only fuel our bodies with the energy it needs foods such as fruits and vegetables can even help to reduce the risk of developing disease in the body by providing us with powerful defenses. Many healthy foods contain what are called antioxidants which can help to eliminate harmful substances in the body. When you consume healthy food your body can naturally raise it’s defenses against disease causing bacteria and other harmful substances. When you eat poorly your body loses some of its defenses because of inadequate nutritional value of the food. Eating healthy food is a good step in reduce the risks associated with disease.

Healthy food such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables also contain a compound called fiber. When you eat these foods the fiber helps to keep your digestive system functioning properly and aids in the process of waste elimination. Without adequate fiber your digestive track has to work harder than it should. Fiber also helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer periods of time reducing the risks you will overeat on unhealthy snack foods.

Our bodies are a machine just like a car and they require proper fuel. When you eat healthy foods you give your body that fuel it needs to sustain itself throughout your day. Healthy food provides all the vital vitamins and minerals that help your body to function properly. Proper eating habits also help to protect the body form potential disease and compounds like fiber in healthy food help the digestive track function properly too.
