Everyone feels upset or sad at some point because that’s a normal part of life but when the feelings become permanent, then it becomes serious. Many people don’t realize, when people become depressed, it becomes hard for them to function normally. Life becomes a challenge that they aren’t willing to accept. If you know someone who is depressed, they need help, right away because the consequences of depression can be very serious.

To be able to help this person you know, you need to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of depression. First of fall you need to know what depression is. Depression is when feelings like, sadness, disappointment, and anger continue for longs periods of time. Feelings like sadness are normal in life but when it lasts for what feels like an eternity to the person, it is then called depression and that person needs help. When a person is depressed it becomes harder for them to eat, sleep, work, study, and enjoy themselves. About one in ten adults are depressed, so if you are one of them you’re not alone.

There us a huge difference between “feeling depressed” and actually being clinically depressed. Depression has been described as “living in a black hole” and “being unable to escape”. People who suffer from depression are unable to get away from their unhappiness and despair. People who are depressed will often have different symptoms depending on the person and the severity of their depression. The symptoms of depression vary by age, gender, culture, and many other situations.

Some symptoms are hopelessness, a bleak outlook, loss of interest in things they used to enjoy, not having an appetite, weight loss or gain, sleep changes, restlessness, loss of energy, self-loathing, little or no concentration, aches and pains and many other symptoms depending on the person. Not all people react the same way, so some people may experience some of these symptoms and others might not. The thinking of people who are depressed often becomes distorted and they make bad choices. Suicide is often viewed as their only way out but it isn’t and you need to help them realize that.

If you notice any of these signs in someone you know and the signs are lasting for a long period of time, get help for them before it’s too late. As long as their still living its not too late. Taking them to the doctor is the best way to deal with it because the can diagnose or refer the patient to where they need to go to get the right help. It’s not too late to help someone, who is depressed.
