Dealing with Heel Pain

What is the cheapest, easiest and least toxic way to do away with foot pain over night?

The answer to this question is a solution that is probably in your kitchen right now! I like to use an old fashioned remedy knows as “Grandma’s Mustard Plaster.” If the pain is hot, aching, or burning and deep in the heel or under the instep the mustard plaster should be of considerable help. This treatment should be applied over night or for a few hours when you’ll not be walking around.

You do not need to use the gourmet mustard for this cure, the cheap yellow stuff actually works better because the mustard seeds are ground finer. The way to apply the mustard is to take a fresh folded paper towel or clean old dish rag. “Butter,” the towel liberally with a mixture of mustard and white flour, equal parts. Place the towel or rag, mustard side against the skin over the sore area of the foot. The mustard should extend an inch or two beyond the painful area and the fabric or paper towel should go a bit beyond that. Leave the plaster there overnight with a plastic bag tied, not too tightly, over the foot to contain the mess. Top the plastic bag with an old sock to hold the whole thing together and keep the mustard plaster in contact with the sore spot on your foot. You will want to use old rags and old socks to reduce the loss of usable cloths, the cloths you use will be stained with mustard to the point of uselessness when you are finished.

When you wake in the morning and wash the mustard away, your foot will be stained pale yellow but the pain will be considerably lessened. A yellow stained foot is a small price to pay for pain relief and it’s cheap, as cheap as the plain yellow mustard that is probably already in your kitchen. This can be applied as often as may be needed with the only side effect being an occasional slight irritation of the skin from the mustard and that yellow tinge to your foot. The skin irritation can be dealt with by putting a rich moisturizer as a barrier on the skin before applying the mustard plaster. If you use a mustard plaster anywhere else on your body, add a layer of terry cloth between the mustard and the skin to protect the more delicate skin form the mustard.

Once the pain is gone get a pair of shoes with a built up arch that is comfortable for you. Before you get out of bed in the morning try to “set” the muscles of your foot by holding it in the neutral position. This means that you should hold your feet at a ninety degree angle to your leg for about ten minuets. A foot board on your bed will help you determine the angle and help you hold the position. Just do not push down on the foot while you are setting the muscle, let it just rest gently against the foot board to keep it at ninety degrees. Your foot should not bear weight until the long flat muscle under the foot is “set”. This last methods is both prevention and treatment so continue to use it after the pain has gone. It will go a long way to prevent it from reoccurring.

I have used the mustard plaster method for hand pain, carpal tunnel and trigger finger, and it works just as well as for the foot. It even works on back pain if the above mentioned precautions are taken!
