Dealing with Chicken Pox Scars

Chicken pox is a common childhood illness that is caused by the herpes zoster virus. In adults, the virus causes a condition called shingles. The illness is characterized by a low grade fever and numerous small red bumps and blisters that eventually rupture and go away. The red spots can itch severely and if scratched open can lead to infections that cause scarring.

The best ways to prevent scarring from chicken pox lesions is to keep the child from itching as much as humanly possible. This will be difficult but it can be done. Bathing them often in oatmeal baths is a great way to sooth the skin and prevent the blisters from rupturing due to scratching. When bathing children with chicken pox, make sure the water is luke warm. Overly hot water can dry out the skin and cause it to itch more. It can also increase the risk of scars. There are several lotions on the market that contain oatmeal and will soothe the skin and keep the child from itching excessively.

It is always wise, especially in the case of small children, to take them to a pediatrician for an examination to make sure they have chicken pox. The doctor may prescribe some anti-itch ointment to relieve the itching and irritation. Oral Benadryl may also be prescribed for older children who are able to take medications.

As the blisters and spots begin to heal over, vitamin E oil can be applied to each one to encourage the healing process. Vitamin E helps to heal the tissue and reduces scarring. There are several topical ointments and lotions that contain vitamin E oil and will help to keep the skin moist and prevent scarring as the tissues heal.

Essential oils, such as lavender, can also be added to lotions and bathwater to prevent itching and discomfort due to the blisters and bumps. Essential oils have components in them that help to control the itching, as well as reducing fever. Essential oil blends can be used to strengthen the tissues and as aromatherapy agents to help control symptoms by breathing in the aroma from the oils.

The easiest way to prevent scars from any type of injury, including chicken pox, is to keep the skin healthy, moist and supple. Using warm, not hot water and adding ingredients to the bath that prevents the skin from drying out and chapping are the easiest ways to prevent skin damage.
