Over 90 million people suffer from bad breath or halitosis as it is otherwise known. There can be many causes of bad breath that people might not realize such as bacteria that has accumulated in between a persons’ teeth or on their tongue, or even as a side effect of taking certain medications. Luckily there are a few easy solutions to get rid of bad breath.
Give Your Teeth, Gums and Tongue More Attention.
One of the most frequent causes of bad breath is bacteria on teeth, gums or tongue. Be sure to brush your teeth well (including after every meal if possible), use dental floss and brush tongue well with toothbrush or a tongue scraper. A quick way to tell if your bad breath is being caused due to food being stuck in between teeth is to take a quick smell of your dental floss after you use it. If you discover that your toothbrush or floss alone has not been doing the job, invest in a water pick.
Most people do not realize that saliva is one of your best defenses against bad breath. If you suffer from dry mouth regularly or due to medication you may be taking, this can be your culprit. Chewing gum increases the saliva production in your mouth which helps wash away bacteria and food particles. So chew gum regularly throughout the day, especially after meals. Just be sure that it is sugarless to avoid cavities.
Drink More Water
Again, this would help with dry mouth. Too often, people are on the verge of dehydration and not even aware of it. By the time you actually feel thirsty it is too late and means that you are already dehydrated so make drinking water all day long part of your natural routine. The water itself will also help keep bacteria to a minimum and will help wash out excess food particles.
Think About your Recent Diet
Many popular low-carb diets have been known to cause bad breath. If you have been on one of these diets recently you might want to consider eating at least some carbs, for example a slice of bread to help diminish bad breath.
Try Some Home Remedies
Here are some home remedies you can try to eliminate bad breath quickly and effectively.
Gargle with Baking Soda – Put some backing soda in a glass of warm water and gargle with it. This also assists in cleaning your tongue.
Gargle with Lemon – Squeezing some lemon juice from a lemon into a glass of warm water and gargling can also help get rid of bad breath.
Eat a lot of Yogurt – Eating yogurt for approximately six weeks has been known to completely eliminate bad breath in many instances.
Drink a cup of unsweetened hot tea after meals is another easy home remedy you can use.
Try an Over-The-Counter Product.
Try products such as Therabreath, Oxyfresh or Profresh. These are three major mouthwashes on the market that are supposed to be effective in getting rid of bad breath odor. They contain the ingredient chlorine dioxide. They supposedly don’t taste as good as most minty mouthwashes, but they are claims that they are pretty effective.
Visit a Doctor
Sometimes bad breath can be a symptom for a more serious condition such as gum (periodontal) disease, an infection or even something as serious as kidney or liver failure. Other medical causes might be: sinus infection, bronchitis or pneumonia, diabetes, chronic acid reflux, or postnasal drip. If you have noticed a persistent odor or unusual taste in your mouth that cannot be attributed to anything you have recently eaten, it might be a good idea to visit a dentist to ensure there is no gum disease or infection. If the dentist cannot find anything, a trip to a doctor is recommended.
