The five sense organs of the human body: vision, hearing, smell, taste and touch are of paramount importance for its proper functioning. An overlooked snag in the deployment of any of them redounds to the individual’s overall mental and physical health. When somebody experiences an impaired sense of vision, for instance, the most reasonable course of action would be to follow these two key steps: to get to the root of their discomfort and address it with diligence and discernment.
What are the underlying triggers of sudden diminution of vision? How do they manifest themselves?
A sudden onset of decrease in vision has manifold causes: an undiscovered medical condition, stress, fatigue, pregnancy and alcohol or drug abuse. The frequency of their occurrence and their degree of risk, however, hinges on a whole range of underlying factors including the individual’s medical record, daily routines or lifestyle.
The most common cause of sudden visual impairment is the so-called refractive error or the inability of the human eye to focus images received from the outside world. A consultation with an optometrist often fixes this problem through the long- and short- run options it proposes.
Iridocyclitis or inflammation of the eye includes sudden diminution of vision among its most common symptoms. Likewise when it comes to other ocular disorders such as acute glaucoma (sudden increase in IOP), optic neuritis ((inflammation of the optic nerve), intraocular tuberculosis, Central Retinal Artery Occlusion (CRAO) – a rare ocular disorder affecting children and elderly alike-, or seasonal hyperacute panuveitis- a diffused intraocular inflammation encountered mainly in children.
Sudden diminution of vision qualifies as a symptom for AIM or acute idiopathic maculopathy (a retinal abnormality), Weber Christian syndrome (a rare inflammatory disorder of the subcutaneous fatty tissue), tinnitus (a buzzing noise in your ears), diabetes, arteriosclerosis, syphilis, dermatological lesions, high blood pressure and even cancer.
Exhaustion and the strain of managing both a family and a career can trigger visual impairment too. Should such an unfortunate occurrence befall you you’d better slow down and set your priorities straight.
During pregnancy women often experience recurrent episodes of sudden decrease in vision, especially in the first semester, when hormonal changes are the most dramatic. As the pregnancy evolves, these episodes abate to utter cessation.
Chronic excess alcohol and drug intake may lead to sudden visual disturbances. Similarly, crush dieting and susceptibility to nutritional disorders often engender the same scope of visual disorders.
