You are brushing your teeth and suddenly notice that your gums are bleeding. This can be a very scary moment. Bleeding and sore gums are both signs of Gum Disease and Gingivitis. It is imperative for you to see a dentist for proper diagnosis and treatment. Yet, if you are unable to see a dental professional there are some simple and inexpensive ways to help your gums at home. Having a healthy dental routine is beneficial to your overall health and happiness.
Floss your teeth every day.
You may think that your gums are bleeding because you are flossing but this is not true. Your gums are bleeding because of a rapidly growing collection of bacteria due to not flossing on a daily basis. If you floss every day for one week you will notice that the bleeding will have stopped or decrease significantly.
You must practice the proper way to floss. For example, you take a piece of floss about 12 inches long. You wrap it around your left middle finger and your right pointer. Gently slide the floss in between your teeth moving it up and down on the sides of each tooth. Never saw at your gums. This will only cause open sores and more bleeding.
You must floss in between all of your teeth. Remember to floss before you brush your teeth. You must remove all the food that has settled in between teeth while you were eating. While you are flossing you may notice a terrible smell. This is the old and unremoved food that has been decaying in your mouth. A dental cleaning may be needed in severely infected mouths.
You must pick the right toothbrush.
When you are shopping for a toothbrush look for soft bristle brushes. You can see the different types of labels in the top corners on the front of the package your brush comes in. They are labeled soft, medium and hard. Hard bristles will wear down the enamel of your teeth and cause significant gum damage. Remember not to press down too hard when you are brushing this may cause unnecessary gum wear.
The American Dental Association provides guidelines for tooth care products. When you are shopping for a toothpaste, look for one that is ADA accepted. This will ensure that you are using an adequate tooth care product for a healthy mouth.
Remember to rinse away bad germs. The most inexpensive and most effective way is a half water, half hydrogen peroxide mix. Take a bottle of purified water and pour half into another glass. Then, take the plastic bottle with the remaining water and fill it the rest of the way with hydrogen peroxide. Use this mixture two to three times a day. This will help reduce the number of harmful bacteria in your mouth.
Eat some yogurt. Believe it or not yogurt has many helpful properties. Many yogurts contain Lactobacillus Acidophilus. These little guys help restore balance to our mouth’s ecosystem when bacteria becomes out of control. Yogurt is easily accessable and very inexpensive.
Remember that you cannot replace the care that a dental physician can give you. These are just general steps to taking better care of your mouth. Everyone will notice the dramatic and positive changes in the health of your mouth over time when you put these practices to use.
