Attention deficit disorder (ADD) or Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is a condition in which certain kid behaviors become troublesome to the child as well as to the people who surround the child. What are the hyperactive symptoms of ADD?

Hyperactive children may not be able to sit and wait for even few minutes even in the classroom. They may talk excessively and move around constantly which usually is interpreted as inappropriate. They may not be able to play quietly and could run or climb inappropriately as well. Having a quick temper is also noticeable among these children.

What are the impulsive symptoms?

These are the acts performed without thinking and sometimes it can bring disastrous results. Children may find it difficult to wait for their turn and may answer loudly and inappropriately in the class room. They can show a tendency to intrude into other people’s work while impulsivity can often lead to angry outbursts and temper tantrums. Teachers may often notice the child not taking time to solve questions but try to work on guesses. At the same time, parents of such children may often be afraid as these children tend to say the wrong thing at the wrong time.

How to differentiate ADD from usual child behavior?

As mentioned earlier, it is the frequency of the symptoms and the consistency of the symptoms which can distinguish an ADD child although this may not be an easy task in all ages. However, among preschoolers, impulsivity should be the guiding symptom while when the child grows older, all three features of ADD may become apparent.

Does ADD need treatment?

The myth of ADD will be outgrown by the child should not persuade parents to wait as ADD can often progress into the adult life. At the same time, when considering the disruption it causes to the child in his or her learning and socializing efforts, it is important to intervene as early as possible rather than wait.

What are the treatment modalities for ADD?

Treatment involves many different aspects and medications only play a small role in ADD. However, behavioral therapy could improve the child’s ability to deal with emotions and other thought processes while engaging in organized and constructive work. At the same time, these children need lots of love and care from the parents as well as from the others surrounding them while properly understanding the child’s behavior as a disorder in caring for the child.

These children need to be engaged in interests of their choice and the learning and play activities need to be innovative and interesting for them to keep focus. Clear communication and consistency are also a must for proper parenting while properly understanding the child’s weaknesses and strengths will enable designing tasks which are suited to the child with added interests.
