Cardio equipment, late-night exercise infomercials, round-the-clock fitness centers, workout DVDs…the options for getting in shape can be overwhelming at times. In this age of high-tech equipment and 24 hour fitness facilities many of us overlook the fact that it’s possible to get in shape without any fancy equipment or pricey gym membership. In fact, there are many simple exercises you can do at home to get in better shape and the best part is, they don’t cost a dime.
Once you have the OK from your physician to begin an exercise program, here are some ideas for simple, free (or low-cost) workouts you can do from home:
Walking is a great choice for many people since it’s low impact, easy to get started, and you can do it virtually anywhere – there are even walking DVDs that allow you to perform a walking workout in the privacy of your own home. People often like to buddy with someone to stay motivated and socialize while exercising. This is also a great way to set a good example for your children of the importance of a healthy lifestyle – not to mention a wonderful opportunity to spend more time with them.
Jogging and running are great workouts, but may not be the right choice for everyone. They’re high(er) impact and place more stress on your body.
Jumping rope is a good way to burn extra calories. Plus, the cost of a jump rope is negligible. And before you scoff at the idea or write it off as child’s play, try jumping rope a few minutes and see if it’s as effortless as you remember when you could do it non-stop at recess as a child. Chances are, you’ll be huffing and puffing very shortly if you aren’t used to working out.
MISCELLANEOUS CARDIO/CALESTHENIC EXERCISES
There are myriad other options for at-home cardio: jumping jacks, running in place, punching exercises, are all options that can be done in your home without any equipment.
There are countless workout DVD choices as well. You can find great deals online, at yard sales, and some libraries have workout DVDs you can check out as well. Not to mention the fact that many brand new workout DVDs are very affordable.
For a minimal investment, you can obtain a set of free weights and/or resistance bands to incorporate in your fitness plan.
However, it’s not necessary to spend any money to get a good strength training workout. There are many effective (and tough!) bodyweight exercises that can help get you into much better shape.
It may not sound challenging to workout without weights, but squats, lunges, mountain climbers, push-ups, wall sits, and more can all be INTENSE workouts. There are many great resources online detailing how to perform the various exercises, just search for “bodyweight exercises” or “bodyweight conditioning” and you’ll find more than enough information to put together your own personalized strength training workout.
As you can see from this quick list of simple at-home exercises, anyone can begin to get in better shape without spending a dime or leaving home. Isn’t it time you got started on the road to better health? All it takes is a little time and desire. Wishing you the best!
