For the vast majority of people the spring and summer months are a time to look forward to. However for an ever growing percentage of the population these months bring misery and discomfort! The reason for this is a common condition known as hay fever. This is basically an allergic reaction to pollen in the air. Some people grow up with hay fever while others develop the problem later in life. Some people grow out of hay fever while others find it is a problem that stays with them. What ever the case here are a few facts about hay fever.
Symptoms – The symptoms of hay fever vary from one person to the next, but there are a few more common ones. The eyes often become itchy and start to water, in more extreme case they can even start swelling up. The throat becomes dry and tickly, sometimes you may find a sufferer develops a dry cough. The most well known symptom is probably a runny nose, this can lead to frequent sneezing and regular discomfort. Another symptom that some people have is shortness of breathe, often hay fever is linked to asthma and so someone’s asthma symptoms will intensify when their hay fever gets worse.
Triggers – Well obviously the main cause of hay fever is pollen, but hay fever is not a problem all year round and different times of the year can be worse for different people. It basically depends what kind of pollen you are allergic to. There are many different kinds of pollen and some of these will affect some people worse than others. As this is the case some people can start to suffer with symptoms as early as February and then be bad up until May. Whereas other people can start to suffer in May and struggle right through till July. Usually by the middle of August all the pollen levels are significantly lower and hay fever sufferers can start to relax. Finding out exactly what kind of pollen you are allergic to though can help you to work out what times of the year you are most susceptible to the symptoms of hay fever.
Prevention – If you do suffer from hay fever there are lots of things you can try to prevent the symptoms coming on. The most obvious is to avoid the pollen, so when the pollen count is high stay indoors, areas near the coast also tend to have lower pollen counts. If you are out wear sunglasses, these can act as a barrier to prevent pollen going into the eyes. Spreading a thin layer of Vaseline on the nostrils is also a clever way of preventing pollen from entering the nose. One tips is to purchase some local honey, this apparently helps your immune system to get used to the pollen in the area. Another suggestion is to avoid eating dairy products when your symptoms are bad as apparently these can aggravate the problem. Then there is always the option of medication, there are lots of different products on the market that can ease the suffering of hay fever sufferers. The best option is always to consult your doctor and see what they can suggest.
So although hay fever is a very frustrating condition that does affect millions of people the world over it is something that can be dealt with fairly easily. By just taking a few simple steps you can ease the suffering you undergo and make sure that you are still able to enjoy the spring and summer months.
