Side Effects of Activella

What is Activella?

Activella is a combination pill containing oestradiol and norethindrone which are forms of naturally occurring hormones estrogen and progesterone respectively. Thus, the use of Activella would be in instances where the hormone estrogen and progesterone become depleted and this phenomenon would be mainly seen during the period of menopause in a female.

When administered, Activella can maintain enough blood levels of estradiol and norethisterone to alleviate the distressing symptoms such as hot flushes, vaginal dryness, vulval changes…etc and would also be useful following surgical removal of ovaries, in instances of hypogonadism and in most instances of ovarian failures due to different reasons. At the same time, Activella is also used to treat osteoporosis in which the rate of bone loss would be reduced to a certain extent by the hormone pill.

What are the side effects of Activella?

Even though Activella is relatively well tolerated by many, there are several side effects of various intensities and seriousness manifested due to this drug. Let us first take a look at some of the serious side effects which may occur following the use of Activella.

Among these serious side effects, allergic reactions can be considered rather important although the condition is relatively rare. As such, manifestations such as itching, redness of the skin, appearance of hives, swelling of the lips, face and throat, breathing difficulties…etc, one should seek medical attention as soon as possible since there is a risk of life threatening anaphylactic reactions.

Occurrence of deep vein thrombosis can also be looked at as a serious side effect as it can lead to life threatening emboli formation and thus organ failures.
