About the use of Lispro
Lispro should be kept in your fridge at all times. Lispro can be taken by using a syringe that you will fill from a vial that holds your medication. This is a needle that you will insert into the vial and draw off the amount of insulin you need. You can also use a dosing pen that holds the complete vial. This pen has a dial that you turn to the amount of unit that was prescribed by your doctor. This is a personal choice which one you choose.
Preparing your insulin
The instruction will be given for using a needle. The first thing to do before you get started is wash your hands. Remove the plastic cover of your new insulin bottle and wipe the top with a cotton swab that has been dipped in alcohol.
Pull back the plunger of the syringe this will take the same amount of air as the dosage you will place in the needle. Place the syringe through the rubber seal at the top of the bottle and inject the air that’s in the needle into the bottle by pushing the plunger forward. Turn your bottle of lispro upside down.
Making sure that the tip of the needle is in the actual insulin, pull back on the plunger and draw the correct amount of insulin into the needle. This dosage is measured in units that you can see marked on the needle. Make sure there are no air bubbles in the syringe. If there are turn your bottle upside down holding it with one hand and have the syringe still attached. Tap the syringe with the other hand until the air bubbles float to the top. Air bubbles can cut down on the amount of insulin that you will put in your syringe. You can push the plunger of the syringe to move the bubbles back into the bottle pull back on the plunger again and fill the amount of units you need in your syringe.
Insulin lispro is injected just under the skin. Your doctor or his staff will show you the best sites on your body to give yourself the injections. Don’t forget to clean the site with an alcohol swab before you inject yourself. Hold a fold of skin and inject the needle at a 90degree angle if you’re a thin person you may have to pinch the skin and inject at a 45 degree angle. Inject your Insulin Lispro and remove the needle.
