How to Avoid Boredom on the Treadmill

A treadmill is a great way to get aerobic exercise, either at your home or the gym. Unfortunately, walking or running on the same machine in the same spot can become a little monotonous. There are various ways that you can make your treadmill routine more interesting and increase your likelihood of sticking with it.

Look for distractions

Just because you are exercising on a treadmill does not mean that you can’t be doing something else. Look to some form of distraction to keep your mind busy while on the treadmill. You might be able to watch television. A lot of gyms have televisions above the machines and allow you to listen through the machine or your own private music player. You can set up a television if you are in your home. They even make videos that make you feel like you are running through a forest or another exciting locale. You can listen to music, talk on the phone or look at a magazine. Of course, make sure that whatever you do is safe; don’t watch television if you will fall off the treadmill while doing so.

Use programs on the machine

The more sophisticated treadmills come with programs that vary the speed and possibly the incline. They generally have several such programs, which may include a gentle hill or interval training. These can help keep you “on your toes” and provide more distraction.

Vary settings manually

Almost all treadmills at least allow you to change the speed, and many also incline. You can vary them yourself to keep the workout more interesting. Challenge yourself. You can also experiment with different combinations of speed and incline.

Do interval training with other exercises

If you have other exercises in your training program then you can take breaks from the treadmill to do those activities. This is called interval training. As long as you exercise in spans of 10 minutes, you will get the cardio benefit. You might find the treadmill more interesting if you are not on it for a long time but instead go on and off of it. You might alternate it with weight training, for instance. You can also consider doing other forms of cardio such as the bicycle so that you do not feel like you are doing the treadmill every day.

A treadmill provides important exercise that can keep you strong and healthy. The above techniques can help you avoid boredom with your routine.
